History

We are transitioning to the fourth generation of the Midla family to manage Flat Stone Lick.  The initial 94 acres were purchased by Michael Midla in 1915.  He ran a successful dairy, milking cows, processing milk, and delivering it door to door.  Joe Midla took over the dairy operation from his father, purchasing additional acreage over the years.

The first registered Herefords were purchased in 1955.  The beef operation transitioned to Les Midla, who purchased more farmland to expand the operation.  Now his son, Brendan Midla, is taking over the reins, managing the business of the cattle operation as part of a family partnership, with input from uncles Lowell and Larry plus his sister, Kim.

Over the years, the farm has received several conservation and cattle awards, beginning with 7 Benchmark Dams in the year that the program began, more than any other breeder in the APHA registry of performance breeders.

The Midla family has a long history of leadership in Hereford and agricultural organizations.  Joe and his wife Louise were active in Farm Bureau and were honored by the PA Hereford Association with a lifetime achievement award.  For many years, Les has served as an AHA annual meeting delegate, proudly representing PA breeders.  Brendan is the Vice President of the Mason Dixon Hereford Association and Nancy serves as its treasurer.  Lowell is a PA Hereford Association board member and is a past president of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology.

Flat Stone Lick has hosted many field days and educational events over the years. We are proud to promote agriculture, the cattle industry, and especially Hereford cattle.
